Q: How Do They Work?
Contrary to popular belief bar codes don't contain the price but instead represent unique numbers correlating to products stored in a database.
A focused laser beam (moving at 10,000"/sec) scans the bars by reflecting light off the background.
An optical sensor reads this pattern & converts the light/dark bars which is
instantly relayed back to ShopTouch/Pro & matched with a data file containing the product description, supplier & cost etc.
The first 2 bars identify the country (50=UK), the next 5 the manufacturer, the next 5 the manufacturer's product no, & finally a CDV (check digit verifier) bar used to ensure the entire code is read correctly.
Q: Which
Does Shop Touch/Pro Read?
All including the most common EAN (European Article Number) 13 or 8 digit codes
issued by the ANA (Article Numbering Association).
Other popular ones are UPC, In-house (prefixed by 21) & Scale-Generated Price-Embedded (prefixed by 20 or 02).
Q: Can ShopTouch/Pro Incorrectly Read a Bar Code?
No. It either reads correctly or not at all.
